Thirupati: A stampede occurred near the Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan ticket center of the famous Tirupati temple on Wednesday (Jan. 8), killing six people. More than 4,000 devotees had been standing in queues at various ticket centers since early morning for Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan tickets. A large number of devotees tried to get the ‘Vaikuntha Dwara Sarva Darshan’ token at the Vishnu residence when a stampede broke out. Many were injured in the incident. The injured have been taken to the nearby Ruya Hospital for treatment.

Andhra Pradesh: Six people died in a stampede on Wednesday (January 8) night while collecting tokens for the ‘Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan’ of the famous Tirupati temple, police officials said. Three of them were women, one of whom has been identified as Mallika, a native of Salem in Tamil Nadu.
More than 4,000 devotees had been standing in queues at various ticket centres since early morning for Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan tickets. A stampede broke out when a large number of devotees tried to collect the ‘Vaikuntha Dwara Sarva Darshan’ token at the Vishnu Niwas. Several people were injured in the incident. The injured have been taken to the nearby Ruya Hospital for treatment. The stampede occurred in places like Srinivasam, Byragipateda, Ramanaidu School, Satyanarayanapuram etc. Tirumala Tirupati Temple Board Chairman B.R. Naidu has held an emergency meeting regarding the incident.

‘The stampede is an unfortunate incident. Six people have died in the tragedy. Only one has been identified. CM Chandrababu Naidu has expressed deep displeasure over the incident and will meet the families of the deceased tomorrow (January 9) at 11.45 am. Such incidents should not be repeated. We are looking into the tragedy,’ said TTD Chairman B.R. Naidu.
