Sripagar: National Congress (NC) leader Umar Abdullah took oath as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. Ten years later, the government was formed in Jammu and Kashmir, and Umar was sworn in as deputy chief minister along with his party’s Surinder Chaudhary.

Shortly after being declared the winner of the Jammu Kashmir Assembly Elections, Abdullah also stated that the ‘balance of representation’ was going to be a challenge for the new government. “This government will be as much a govt for those who voted for BJP as much as for those who voted for NC and Congress,” Omar Abdullah said in an interview with the deKoder.
The National Conference and the Congress are set to form the Jammu and Kashmir government after securing a majority on Tuesday. The BJP garnered 29 seats while the Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP secured three. NC chief Farooq Abdullah said his son and senior party leader Omar Abdullah would be the next Chief Minister.
The Union Territory held its first assembly elections in ten years, which is also the first assembly poll after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 that granted special status. Voting was held in three phases in the 90 assembly seats: September 18, September 25, and October 1.
According to poll panel data, 63.45 per cent voter turnout was recorded in all three phases. A voter turnout of 61% was registered in the first phase, 57.3% in the second phase of voting and 68.72% in the third phase.
In the multi-cornered fight, the National Conference and the Congress fought the elections in an alliance and the People’s Democratic Party, in addition to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the two other major players.
