61-year-old Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labor Party, is preparing to enter the office of 10 Downing Street as the new Prime Minister of Britain. As Leader of the Opposition, Stormer, who used to whip the Rishi Sunak government, will now step up to the mantle himself. Who is Keir Stormer? The Labor Party suffered a miserable defeat in the 2019 British General Election. It had never seen such a defeat in the last 85 years. The following year Keir Stormer assumed leadership of the Labor Party. He was already betting on bringing the Labor Party back to power.
Born on 2nd September 1962 in Oxted, Surrey, Keir Starmer was born into an ordinary family. His mother was a nurse in the National Health Service (NHS). He was suffering from a very rare and severe rheumatic disease. Starmer’s father worked as an equipment manufacturer. Brought up in a poverty-stricken family, Stormer attended Reigate Grammar School. Stormer was the first in his family to enter university. He studied law at the University of Leeds.
Before entering politics, Starmer made a name for himself as a lawyer by advocating for human rights. Dedicated to social justice, he was criticized as a ‘lefty’ lawyer or a leftist.
During the election campaign, he repeatedly said that his father was a toolmaker and his mother was a nurse, which was fodder for many memes. His mother died in 2015, a few weeks after he was elected to the British Parliament. Father also passed away within three years. He did not have a good relationship with his father. He never said ‘I respect you’. Starmer claimed that he regretted this one decision.
Starmer’s shift to the centrist was harshly criticized by members of the left wing of the Labor Party. The announcements that the Labor Party would raise income tax, abolish university tuition fees, and nationalize most of Britain’s public services caused discontent among party supporters.
